Theory of knowledge guide 1 Introduction Purpose of this document This publication is intended to guide the planning, teaching and assessment of theory of knowledge (TOK) in schools. TOK teachers are the primary audience, although it is expected that teachers will use the guide to inform students and parents about the course.
Plato is most well-known for his theory on forms but I find Plato’s Theory of Knowledge behind his example of the cave and divided line fascinating. There are three main examples I want to focus on that can be used in describing Plato’s theory of knowledge: his allegory of The Cave (my favorite), his metaphor of the Divided Line and with some extra help from his theory on Forms.
Here are my top tips for getting to top marks on your Theory of Knowledge essay. 1. All ToK essays are cross-disciplinary; they are never just about one way of knowing (perception, language, reason, etc) or one area of knowledge (mathematics, natural sciences, human sciences, history, etc).
Theory of knowledge (TOK) is a required core subject in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. It receives a letter grade like the Extended Essay, and combines with the latter to contribute numerically (maximum 3 marks) to the awarding of the full IB Diploma.

The Theory of Knowledge course of study requires a minimum of 100 hours over the years of two the IB DP (IBO, 2008). TOK assessment consists of a presentation that is internally assessedwith students, also required to submit a TOK essay of 1,200-1,500 words from a list of topics supplied each year by the IB.
